For the application segment of the workshop, we will experience a "mini" inquiry. We will illustrate the types of learning and teaching strategies that promote active student inquiry and limited teacher centered delivery.
The objectives
explore one online "virtual" educational resource
work in a collaborative group
create an inquiry curricular recommendation
Activity
you will work with one or two colleagues
you will play the role of "instructional consultants"
you will create a proposal for the imaginary school for expanding the inclusion of
inquiry based teaching into their curriculum
We will begin the "quest" by watching a video of an example of a school that is embracing inquiry.
As you watch the film be prepared to comment on:
1. Is there anything unusual about the students in this school?
2. What are the roles of the teachers in this school?
3. Where is the "classroom" for this school?
4. What strategies do the students use for gathering information about their project?
5. How does the project link with the "real world"?
6. How are students evaluated on their academic success?
The Inquiry
Our inquiry scenario is as follows:
Sunshine Charter Middle School wants to expand its inquiry based learning. Teachers at the school want to expand their collaboration in instructional delivery, interdisciplinary teaching and community based contextual learning. The language, science and social studies teacher want to collaborate on an environmental issues project.
Your job is to make recommendations to this team that will guide their success in planning and implementing inquiry based teaching in their school.
Take a look at one of the "virtual" resource sites provided on this homepage as a possible starting point for the Sunshine School teachers. Respond to the following questions which would provide guidance for the Sunshine teachers.
Choose the "proposal" section below that matches the "site" that your team chooses to review. Answer the questions directly online. In this fashion, we will be able to review a variety of ideas from multiple groups - this is an example of collective inquiry.
Below find a "proposal blog" entry for each of the four example web sites i.e. iearn, uae virtual museum, etc as well as the final option where your team "explores" on their own and shares their example inquiry site(s).
